Costa Rica is one of the smallest countries in the world, it has roughly 5 mn people and 50 k square kilometers. Biodiversity, nature and surf are some of the first things you hear when it comes to Costa Rica´s attractions.
However, once you have spent at least two weeks in this beautiful place, you will realize that, not only there is nature and the people is nice and friendly, but also that they are really great artists and love what they do.
In the province of Guanacaste, in the north pacific, there is a small town called Guaitil. This is the cradle of the traditional Costa Rican pottery, where every single piece is made using the centennial processes, which include a ritual parade to the top of the hill to bring the precious clay; a handmade oven that heats up to 90C, natural inks and pigment extractions and more.
With a quick look at the inside of any of these tiny, but well stocked stores, you will see a large assortment of jars, pots, pans, plates, colorfully decorated with drawings of different types of animal and vegetables species, usually being these the ones that are near the artisans' surroundings.
There are still about 30 ceramic and pottery masters in the Guaitil area, but thankfully, this tradition seems that it will last for generations, as many children and teenagers, recognize this art as a tradition and have started to follow the steps of their granparents and parents, so, we will continue to enjoy one of the most beautiful craftsmanships, traditional Costa Rican pottery!
