Contra Luz was born from the hands of Marcela and Olga, who combine talent to create various pieces of craftsmanship, from their workshop, located in the community of San Joaquín de Flores, in the Heredia province of Costa Rica. This town is a small town with a few thousand inhabitants, characterized by its unique ice cream producers, their “sorbetera” ice cream is a delightful dessert; in this community, is tradition to decorate with illumination the houses and gardens during Christmas time, the best in the country!
They mainly work with certified cedar wood, decorated with pieces of colored glass, to form nature designs, such as birds and plants from Costa Rica. Also, stainless steel wire, to form shapes of butterflies, angels, dogs and cats and fill them with colored glass. It is tradition in Costa Rica, to make a representation of the birth of Jesus as part of the Christmas celebration, and for this season, we call it “pasitos” and, Contra Luz, has a great deal of different kind of pasitos. Speaking about the wood works, there are large boards, 45 cm high by 25 cm wide, better known as “bread boards”, because you can put a full baguette to cut it. They also have “cheese boards” which are a little smaller. One of the most beautiful pieces they make are the coffee drippers, since they represent the Costa Rican coffee tradition. You can also find tea boxes, which are also made of cedar wood, with decoration made of glass, a trademark of Olga and Marce. These boxes are aprox 30x30 cms
Pasitos or, the representation of the birth of Jesus
Among the most popular and best seller designs that they make are those of hummingbirds, bird of paradise plants, coffee branches, monstera leaves and any design you want to put on. Most of the designs you find in the wood crafts, are mainly of nature, which we have a lot.
